According to the new constitution, which was approved by 86% of voters in December, the President of Chad is chosen for a five-year term by a two-round system, where an absolute majority is needed in the first round to avoid a runoff election. The country's current president, Mahamat Deby, initially came to power in 2021 as a military leader.
Chad's interim President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno will participate in the
presidential election on May 6, the media reported.
"I, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, am a candidate for the 2024 presidential election under the banner of the For a United Chad coalition," he said, as quoted by the media.
The presidential election date was announced on Tuesday, and the leader has not yet revealed his
electoral agenda.
The Chadian electoral commission stated that the official list of candidates approved by the Constitutional Council will be made public on March 24, 2024.
It's known that
opposition leader Yaya Dillo Djerou, who
was killed during recent clashes in the capital, was planning to run in the forthcoming election. According to reports, the authorities said that Dillo resisted arrest and shot at security forces.
In April 2021, after the passing of Chadian President Idriss Deby, a transitional military council was formed, headed by General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the late president's son, to rule the nation. The council declared its dissolution on October 8, 2022, appointing Deby as the country's interim leader.
The interim president reportedly stated earlier this week that when he took power as military leader three years ago, the army "saved the country from the abyss and from chaos."
