WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - In March 2024, presidential elections will be held in Russia. The final list of candidates consists of four people, including the current head of the country, Vladimir Putin. The president will be elected for the next six years, until 2030.
Washington focuses on destabilizing the internal political situation in Russia ahead of the March 15-17 presidential election by artificially whipping up the Russophobic hysteria in the United States, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said on Tuesday.

"The Russophobic hysteria artificially whipped up in the United States confirms the focus of the US authorities on destabilizing the internal political situation in our country on the eve of the presidential elections," the Russian Embassy quoted Antonov on Telegram as saying.

The ambassador added that it is "another manifestation of Washington's two-faced approaches to human rights issues."

"While calling for freedom of speech abroad and adherence to democratic values, the US authorities shamefully silence their own faults and shortcomings. Among them: police brutality, racial discrimination, numerous cases of hatred on religious grounds, aggressive imposition of the neoliberal agenda," the statement read.

Antonov added that even US journalists "are beginning to wonder: why the US authorities would not direct their irrepressible energy in a useful way. For example, to resolve the humanitarian crisis on the southern border."
