MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Enhanced security measures remain in place in the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, following the recent deadly attack on national security agency buildings and the subsequent violent clashes between the government forces and opposition, media reported on Thursday.
On Wednesday, several people were killed in an attack on the office of the Chadian security agency, with the authorities blaming the opposition Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) for the incident. Later in the day, a group of soldiers tried to take control of the presidential palace in N'Djamena. Government forces stormed the PSF headquarters.
Media reported that Yaya Dillo Djerou, the PSF leader and the cousin of the transitional Chadian president, had been killed in the clashes, but the information has not been officially confirmed yet. The authorities declared a curfew to protect the population.
The military forces can still be seen in the Chadian capital, the Alwihda Info news portal reported, adding that the city streets are under constant control of law enforcement officers to prevent further clashes. Moreover, internet services remain suspended and private schools are still closed due to persisting security risks, the report said.
The situation in Chad has escalated ahead of the upcoming presidential election in the country. On Tuesday, the authorities announced that the first election tour would take place on May 6. Chad is currently ruled by a military council under transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby. His cousin and most vocal critic, Djerou, was planning to run in the forthcoming election.
