The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) held presidential, legislative and local elections on December 20 and 21. On the last day of 2023, it became known that Tshisekedi had been re-elected for a second term. The results, however, had to be confirmed by the court.
The Constitutional Court of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday dismissed two legal challenges to the interim results of the
presidential election and definitively
confirmed the re-election of President
Tshisekedi.
"Even when taking reported irregularities and their influence on the ballot into account, the order of arrival is not disrupted," the court's president, Dieudonne Kamuleta, reportedly said.
Kamuleta added that Theodore Ngoyi, the
opposition presidential candidate who received approximately 0.02% of the vote, lacked evidence to support his claim that the counting process had compromised the fairness of the election, the media reported.
As a result, Tshisekedi will continue to lead the second-largest country in Africa for another five years.
The opposition, however, says the results of the election must be annulled. Some opposition presidential candidates also wanted to hold a demonstration to protest the alleged election violations. However, DRC authorities
banned protests.
The previous presidential election, originally scheduled for 2016, was repeatedly postponed until December 2018. The United Nations declared that Tshisekedi's victory in the 2018 elections was the "first peaceful transfer of power" in the DRC since independence.
