Democratic Republic of Congo Bans Protests Against Alleged Election Fraud, Official Says
09:02 27.12.2023 (Updated: 09:03 27.12.2023) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have banned protests called by the opposition against alleged irregularities during the recent presidential election, DRC Vice Prime Minister Peter Kazadi said on Tuesday.
Several
opposition presidential candidates wanted to hold a demonstration on Wednesday to protest the alleged election violations and the extension of voting deadlines. They believe the results of the election must be annulled.
"This public manifestation by the opposition violates the legal provisions stipulating that the [election] results must be challenged before the constitutional court or other competent courts," Kazadi was quoted as saying by the Politico.cd news outlet.
Moreover, the official results of the presidential election have not been made public yet, he noted.
The DRC was set to hold presidential, parliamentary, local and municipal
elections on December 20, but the Independent National Electoral Commission was forced to allow polling stations to continue operating on December 21 in several areas due to logistical problems.
Preliminary results released by the electoral commission on Monday show Tshisekedi leading by a wide margin with over 80% of the vote.
