MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States is still working on a mineral deal with Ukraine after the failed signing at the White House, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted, adding that signing the agreement is an important topic for the US, but not the main one on the agenda in the talks with the Ukrainian delegation.
Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky is not part of the Ukrainian delegation at the upcoming meeting with US officials in Saudi Arabia and will not participate in it, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.
"I mean, he’s not – he’s not part of the – I mean, he’s here meeting with the crown prince, but I don’t think he’ll be part of our meetings. Our meetings are with the delegation they’ve sent – their national security advisor, their defense minister, and their foreign minister – is my understanding," Rubio told reporters on his way to Saudi Arabia.
At the same time, Rubio did not rule out the possibility of an informal conversation with Zelensky in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, the meeting of the Ukrainian delegation with representatives of the United States begins in Saudi Arabia, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
"A meeting of the Ukrainian and American delegations begins in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia," the statement read.
The Ukrainian delegation gathering for the meeting includes Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Washington wants to see Kiev's desire for peace at talks with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia.
"As for Saudi Arabia, it does not matter what we are waiting for; it matters what the United States is waiting for. At various levels, we have repeatedly heard statements that the United States is waiting for a demonstration from Ukrainians of a desire to make peace. Actually, this is probably what everyone is waiting for — do the members of the Zelensky regime really want peace or do they not? Of course, it is very important and necessary to decide on this," Peskov told reporters on Monday.
