Overall, Tanroads is working on over 15,000 kilometers of roads nationwide, with over 1,300 kilometers already finished. The government has emphasized transparent reporting on these infrastructure developments.
Tanzania's National Roads Agency (Tanroads) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in five major cities: Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha, Dodoma, and Mbeya. The plan also includes improvements in the towns of Moshi, Iringa, and Songea.
The strategy encompasses road expansions, including:
Significant development of Dar es Salaam's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Several phases of the BRT network are nearing completion or in procurement, extending the system to various parts of the city;
Other improvements in Dar es Salaam include flyover construction and lane additions;
The capital, Dodoma, will see the construction of a 112-kilometer Outer Ring Road, which is nearly complete;
Additional road expansions are underway connecting Dodoma to Morogoro, Iringa, and Arusha;
Mwanza's Mwanza-Usagara-JPM Bridge highway is being widened to four lanes, while Mbeya's section of the TANZAM highway is undergoing a similar expansion;
Road expansion designs are in progress for Arusha and Kilimanjaro, with bypasses and bridge construction also planned;
Iringa and Songea have bypass projects in the contract and procurement phases, respectively.
