The appointment of the former Ghanian top diplomat comes at a critical juncture for Libya, as the country continues to grapple with political instability. The UN hopes that Tetteh's leadership will help to promote stability and unity in the North African country.
The United Nations has appointed seasoned Ghanaian diplomat Hanna Serwaa Tetteh as its new Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Support
Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), according to a UN press release.
Tetteh, former Foreign Minister of Ghana, becomes the tenth individual to assume this challenging role since the outbreak of the Libyan conflict in 2011.
"Ms. Tetteh brings to this position decades of experience at the national, regional and international levels, including most recently as the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa from 2022 until 2024," the UN statement added.
Prior to this, she held the position of Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union (2018-2020) and Director-General of the UN Office at Nairobi (UNON).
Her deep understanding of African political dynamics and extensive experience in conflict resolution and peacebuilding are expected to be crucial in navigating the complex
Libyan landscape.
