The first day of the Berber New Year falls on January 12-14 in the Gregorian calendar, depending on the region of Africa where it is celebrated.
The Berber New Year, also known as Yennayer in local culture, is celebrated on the first day of the year according to the agricultural calendar used by the Berber people. This calendar is based on the cycle of the moon and the sun, so it differs from the Gregorian calendar, and the Berber New Year begins 12–14 days later.
The celebrations are widespread throughout North Africa in Algeria, Morocco and other African countries with a strong Amazigh (another name for Berber) identity, including Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, as well as West African countries such as Mali, Mauritania, Niger and even Burkina Faso.
The festivities take many forms: people wear traditional Amazigh clothes and jewelry, exchange congratulations, and prepare rich meals, with all this accompanied by authentic music and songs.

The word Yennayer is said to be made up of two Berber words: "yan," meaning "the first," and "ayyur," meaning "month." Thus, Yennayer literally means "the first month."
