Launched in 2003, the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) aims to enhance food security, reduce rural poverty, create jobs, and drive economic growth while preserving the environment. CAADP targets 6% annual agricultural growth and urges African Union members to allocate at least 10% of their budgets to agriculture.
Kenyan President William Ruto traveled to Uganda on Saturday to attend the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme.
In a
statement, State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed explained that the summit will evaluate progress toward achieving agricultural transformation targets and adopt the Kampala Declaration, which outlines a shared vision for transforming agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035.
"The outcomes are expected to shape agricultural policies that drive economic growth and achieve food security across the continent," the statement noted.
President Ruto will use the one-day visit to showcase Kenya’s ongoing efforts to enhance food security, create jobs, and reduce poverty. He is also expected to highlight the alignment of the summit’s agenda with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and Vision 2030, reaffirming the country's commitment to sustainable agricultural development, according to the statement.
During his visit, Ruto will also hold discussions with Ugandan President Yoweri
Museveni and other African leaders to strengthen bilateral ties and gather support for his role as champion of the African Union’s Institutional Reforms.
