This comes amid ongoing tensions between neighboring Somalia and Ethiopia over a maritime access agreement. The dispute arose after Addis Ababa signed a maritime access deal with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia. The move sparked strong opposition from Mogadishu and led to a diplomatic rift between the two neighbors.
Kenya and Uganda should join forces to resolve the
ongoing dispute between their East African neighbors, Somalia and Ethiopia, to prevent destabilization of the Horn of Africa region, according to Kenyan President William Ruto.
President Ruto made this announcement at the 24th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC), held in Arusha, Tanzania on Saturday.
"Because the security of Somalia ... contributes significantly to the stability of our region and the environment for investors and business people and entrepreneurs to thrive," Ruto said during a press conference at the summit, calling on his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Museveni, to help.
The crisis between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu erupted in January following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somalia's self-proclaimed republic of Somaliland.
The agreement gave
Ethiopia direct access to the Red Sea, ostensibly in exchange for recognition of Somaliland's independence.
Somali authorities consider the protocol a violation of the country's sovereignty.
