Number of National Orbital Constellations of BRICS Countries Exceeds 1,200 Spacecrafts: Roscosmos
In late October 2023, Yuri Borisov, head of Russian state space corporation Roscosmos, revealed that BRICS countries had shown interest in Russia's Sfera (Sphere) multi-satellite orbital constellation project.
The total composition of the national orbital constellations of the BRICS countries exceeds 1,200
spacecrafts with the accession of new countries to the bloc, Head of the Russian space agency Yuri Borisov said at the meeting of the heads of space agencies of the BRICS member countries.
Borisov proposed to create an international system to ensure the safety of space activities, which would be built on the basis of an open information platform – a program complex for information exchange and monitoring of the situation in near-Earth space.
"The open platform will be a kind of information hub of the Milky Way to exchange data on the situation in near and distant space, including warnings of dangerous approaches of space objects to prevent collisions," Roscosmos added, noting that access to the system will be open to all participants, regardless of competencies and technical capabilities, goals and terms of cooperation.
He also offered partnership in the field of manned cosmonautics. He noted the possibility of creating modules for the BRICS countries as part of the Russian Orbital Station (ROS), as well as a target module of the BRICS alliance for a joint manned space program.
"The cooperation includes experiments for scientific and applied research, as well as a full cycle of training of BRICS astronauts," the state corporation said.
Earlier in the day, a Russian initiative to create a BRICS space council
was supported by Head of the South African National Space Agency Humbulani Mudau.
