Last week, Humbulani Mudau, CEO of the South African National Space Agency, told Sputnik Africa that space technology will help African countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing poverty to below 3%.
The African Space Agency, which is being created as part of the African Union's space policy, will be based in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, African Union (AU) Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation Mohammed Belhocine said in an interview with Chinese state media Xinhua.
"The AU space policy mandates the creation of an African space agency. We have taken steps over the past year and this year to ensure the establishment of this agency. Member states have discussed and decided that it will be based in Cairo, Egypt," Belhocine was quoted as saying.
Belhocine noted that preparations for the creation of the African space agency are 90% complete, and it will begin work within a few months.

"We are not yet fully established, but progress is being made rapidly. It will take a few months to be officially established, with some recruitment tasks still needing to be completed," he reportedly said.

According to the commissioner, many African countries are interested in space exploration, and even more countries will become interested in it as a result of the agency's activities.
At the same time, he emphasized that the main principle of African space policy is the use of space resources for peaceful purposes and, in particular, to achieve sustainable development goals.

Ethiopia Interested in Int'l Lunar Station Project With Russian Participation, Official Says
African countries are actively involved in space exploration. This is evidenced by Ethiopia's desire to participate in the 2028 unmanned mission to the moon and the International Lunar Station project with Russia, local media revealed last week, citing Ethiopia's State Minister for Innovation and Technology, Yeshurun Alemayehu.
Moreover, Algeria and Egypt have also reportedly expressed interest in participating in the International Lunar Station project.
Ethiopia has also constructed East Africa's largest observatory and research center in Entoto, on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa. A national space research program is underway, and financing from the national budget is constantly growing.
Another East African country, Tanzania, is also not far behind: last December, it secured an orbital slot at 16 degrees west longitude for its first satellite, which Information Minister Nape Nnauye called an "essential leap" toward technological advancement.
