The militant group al-Shabaab launched an assault on a Somali military base in the country's southwest, killing at least 17 people, media reported, citing a military officer.
The attackers, armed with suicide car bombs, briefly took control of the base before being driven out by government forces, the officer said, adding that more than 10 militants and seven Somali soldiers were killed.
According to media reports, al-Shabaab confirmed responsible for the attack, claiming
to have killed 57 government soldiers.
Eyewitnesses told the media that during the assault, militants also set military vehicles ablaze and seized others.
Last week, al-Shabaab militants detonated a car bomb at hotel SYL near the presidential palace and engaged in a gunfight inside the hotel. Three people died, and 27 others were injured in the hotel attack.
The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) announced late Saturday the arrest of 16 people suspected of being involved in the terrorist attack at hotel Syl, including its organizer Abdinasir Dahir Nur.
"Following extensive investigation, security forces successfully captured the network responsible for the SYL Hotel terrorist attack, arresting 16 suspects including the mastermind Abdinasir Dahir Nur. Justice will be served in court for all involved," NISA posted on X.
