US Conducts 'Self-Defense' Airstrike Against Somalia’s Al-Shabaab, Africa Command Says

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The Somalia-based radical Islamist group al-Shabaab*, which has close ties to the international terrorist organization al-Qaeda*, has been waging an armed insurgency against the central government of Somalia since the mid-2000s.
The United States conducted a "collective self-defense airstrike" again the US-designated terrorist group al-Shabaab in Somalia over the weekend, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a release.
"At the request of the federal government of Somalia, US Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense against the al Shabaab terrorist group on Mar. 2," the release said.
The airstrike took place in a remote area in the vicinity approximately 45km northeast of Kismayo, the release added
