CAIRO (RIA Novosti) - Earlier on Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it was carrying out massive airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The media reported that Israel had decided to resume military operations against Hamas after the movement rejected US proposals for a ceasefire.
The death toll from Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip has increased to 326, the Gaza Strip's Health Ministry said on Tuesday. Previous reports indicated that the death toll grew to 310, with hundreds injured, according to the ministry.
"So far, 326 victims have been admitted to hospitals in the Gaza Strip as a result of the numerous attacks carried out by ... [Israel] since early this morning," the ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Israeli prime minister’s office said that Israel has resumed attacks on the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas’ refusal to accept the US plan to extend the ceasefire regime and continue the hostage release.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have instructed the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] to take strong action against the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip ... This follows Hamas's repeated refusal to release our hostages, as well as its rejection of all of the proposals it has received from US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and from the mediators," the office said in a statement.
The IDF is currently attacking Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip in order to achieve the goals set by the "political echelon," including the release of the Israeli hostages, both living and dead, the office said.
"Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength. The operational plan was presented by the IDF over the weekend and approved by the political leadership," the prime minister’s office added.
From January 19 to March 1, a ceasefire was in effect in Gaza as part of the first phase of the agreement between Israel and Hamas on the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. On the night of March 2, after the expiration of the 42-day truce, the Israeli authorities announced that US Special Representative Steve Witkoff had proposed a new plan to extend the temporary truce in the Gaza Strip, since it was currently impossible to overcome the differences between Israel and Hamas regarding a complete end to the war. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel had agreed to the plan, while Hamas had not.
On March 2, Israel announced a ban on the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and also threatened further pressure on Hamas for refusing to accept the new US plan to extend the truce in the enclave and release the remaining hostages. Israel is interested in continuing the first stage of the deal to free all hostages without giving guarantees of ending the war. Hamas, in turn, insists on moving to the second stage of the Gaza deal, which provides for a complete end to the war and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the enclave.
