BEIRUT (Sputnik) - Any prolongation of the first phase of the ceasefire was unacceptable for Hamas, the Palestinian movement's spokesman emphasized, accusing Israel of trying to return to the starting point in the ceasefire-for-hostages talks.
Israel is responsible for the absence of talks on the second phase of the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said on Saturday.

"Israeli occupants are responsible for the absence of the beginning of negotiations on the second phase of the Gaza agreement," he said in an interview with Al Araby broadcaster.

Qassem suggested that Israel wanted to return Israeli hostages, who are being held captive in Gaza, forcefully by continuing the military operation in the Palestinian enclave.

"The occupants are avoiding their obligations to end the war and complete the troop withdrawal from Gaza," he pointed out.

The ceasefire has been in effect in the Gaza Strip since January 19 as part of the agreement between Israel and Hamas to release Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The guarantors of the agreement are Qatar, Egypt and the United States, which set up a coordination center in Cairo. The first stage of the deal provides for a partial exchange of prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli troops to the Gaza borders and access to humanitarian aid.
