The number of Ugandan Defense Forces troops deployed in South Sudan was not disclosed, and the Sudanese government has yet to confirm the presence of Kampala's units in the country.
The Uganda People's Defense Force's (UPDF) special units entered South Sudan's capital, Juba, two days ago to secure it and support South Sudan People's Defense Forces, UPDF chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba
said on X on Monday.
"We shall protect the entire territory of South Sudan like it was our own. We, the UPDF, only recognize one President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir. […] Any move against him is a declaration of war against Uganda! All those who commit that crime will learn what it means," the general stated.
According to the Ugandan official, operation "Mlinzi wa Kimya" (Protector of Peace) has begun in South Sudan.
Tensions in South Sudan have risen in recent days after security forces loyal to President Salva Kiir detained two opposition ministers and several senior military officers, and one of them has since been released. The arrests followed violent clashes between government forces and the White Army militia, a group largely made up of Vice President Machar's Nuer ethnic group.
