Recent tensions in South Sudan stem from disputes over security arrangements and the integration of forces into a unified national army, Deputy Speaker of the Council of States Deng Deng Akon told Sputnik, confirming that these disagreements are actively being negotiated to reach a resolution.Akon emphasized that the country remains stable despite recent unrest, with President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar fulfilling their duties. The deputy speaker reiterated that Machar continues to perform his responsibilities daily without restrictions, and called on African mediators overseeing South Sudan’s peace process to intensify efforts "to overcome any obstacles that stand in the way of completing the security agreement."Akon also denied allegations linking Machar to the Nuer-dominated White Army militia, noting that investigations are underway to clarify events during the recent UNMISS staff evacuation in Nasir. On resolving the impasse, he urged regional and international guarantors of the peace deal—such as IGAD and the African Union—"to intervene to overcome the obstacles."

The crisis in South Sudan worsened when security forces loyal to President Kiir arrested opposition-linked ministers and military officials after violent clashes with the White Army militia. The situation further deteriorated last Friday when a UN helicopter evacuating troops near Nasir was shot down, killing a crew member and soldiers.
Recent tensions in South Sudan stem from disputes over security arrangements and the integration of forces into a unified national army, Deputy Speaker of the Council of States Deng Deng Akon told Sputnik, confirming that these disagreements are actively being negotiated to reach a resolution.
Akon emphasized that the country remains stable despite recent
unrest, with President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar fulfilling their duties.
“I do not have information about what is rumored about the reason for [the house arrest] of the first vice president of the country, Dr. Riek Machar, and so far the reasons have not been announced by any party,” he said.
The deputy speaker reiterated that Machar continues to perform his responsibilities daily without restrictions, and called on African mediators overseeing South Sudan’s peace process to intensify efforts "to overcome any obstacles that stand in the way of completing the security agreement."
Akon also denied allegations linking Machar to the Nuer-dominated White Army militia, noting that investigations are underway to clarify events during the recent UNMISS staff
evacuation in Nasir.
On resolving the impasse, he urged regional and international guarantors of the peace deal—such as
IGAD and the African Union—"to intervene to overcome the obstacles."
