The crisis in South Sudan escalated after security forces loyal to President Kiir arrested opposition-linked ministers and military officials. The arrests followed violent clashes between government forces and the White Army militia, a group predominantly from VP Machar’s Nuer ethnic community.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
emphasized dialogue and cooperation during talks with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, stating that South Sudan’s stability is crucial to regional peace. He assured both leaders that Somalia and other regional partners are committed to supporting efforts for a peaceful resolution.
The African Union (AU) has also
voiced deep concern over the situation. AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat called for an immediate end to hostilities, urging South Sudanese authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He emphasized the need for all parties to adhere to the ceasefire and engage in national dialogue, while also reaffirming the AU’s push for full implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
The AU is currently coordinating with South Sudanese authorities, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and other stakeholders to de-escalate tensions.
South Sudan, which became independent in 2011, has faced ongoing instability for years.
In December 2013, tensions escalated when President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy, Riek Machar, and ten others of attempting to stage a coup. Machar denied these accusations and fled to lead the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). This led to clashes between the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the SPLM-IO, sparking a civil war.
In 2018, a peace agreement was reached among the government, the SPLM-IO, and other opposition groups. However, key reforms, such as disarmament and preparations for elections, have stalled.
