MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Since Trump returned to power in late January, his administration has stepped up efforts with Russia and Ukraine to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Last Saturday, the US Secretary of State highlighted the importance of all parties taking steps toward sustainable peace during a call with Ukrainian FM Andrii Sybiha.
The UK leadership sees a threat to its interests in promoting the dialogue between the United States and Russia on resolving the Ukrainian conflict, and London fears that this will lead to the failure of the British strategy of "containing" Moscow, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said on Monday.
"According to information received by the SVR, the UK leadership sees a threat to its interests in advancing the dialogue between the US and Russia on resolving the Ukrainian conflict. London fears that this will lead to the failure of the British strategy of ‘containing’ Moscow, the central place in which is occupied by control over Ukraine. According to the British, its probable loss will undermine plans to create a Russophobic 'belt of limitrophe states' in Europe and organize a naval ‘blockade’ of Russia," the statement said.
Furthermore, London is "deeply frustrated" with US President Donald Trump for engaging Russia as a superpower and displaying disregard for close allies. The SVR highlighted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s offense at Trump’s “provocative” remarks during a joint press conference, where he questioned the UK’s ability to “stand up to the Russians alone.”
The SVR reported that following Starmer’s US visit, Downing Street concluded that its “faithful friends” are effectively sidelining the UK in efforts to reshape European and global security. The statement accused British authorities of prioritizing the sabotage of the new US administration’s peacemaking initiatives on Ukraine, tasking media and NGOs with discrediting Trump as “vulnerable to Kremlin manipulation” and unfit for diplomacy.

Ukraine 'May Not Survive' Even With US Support, President Trump Says
Drawing parallels to pre-World War eras, the SVR likened the UK to a chief “arsonist” of global conflict. It warned that Britain’s strategy of isolating itself while fueling tensions would fail.
“It is time to expose these schemes and send a clear signal to perfidious Albion and its elites: your plans will not succeed,” the statement added.
The SVR also criticized Starmer’s government for “bending over backwards” to bolster Ukraine’s resistance to US pressure, noting hollow promises of military aid despite the UK’s economic crisis. However, it acknowledged that British officials privately admit these efforts are futile without sustained US support.
