In a note verbale issued by Niger's Foreign Ministry last Friday, the government announced the termination of the agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), demanding the closure of its offices and the immediate departure of expatriate staff, local media outlet Air Info reported on Wednesday, citing sources. The ICRC expulsion reportedly comes less than three months after a similar measure was taken against French-based international humanitarian NGO ACTED and its Nigerien partner APBE.Although the ICRC has yet to formally respond, on Tuesday the humanitarian organization published a report on its activities in the West African country in 2024, in which it recalled its commitments, including providing medical assistance to more than 120,000 people affected by the armed conflicts.Operating in Niger since 1990, the ICRC expanded its activities in 2007 during the rebellion of the Nigerien Movement for Justice, providing aid to displaced persons, supplying water in conflict zones, and supporting vulnerable communities, Air Info noted.

While no official explanation was given for the decision, the report noted that in November, the Nigerian authorities criticized the EU's allocation of humanitarian aid to NGOs, including the ICRC, accusing it of unilateral actions that lacked transparency and cooperation.
In a note verbale issued by Niger's Foreign Ministry last Friday, the government announced the termination of the agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), demanding the closure of its offices and the immediate departure of expatriate staff, local media outlet Air Info
reported on Wednesday, citing sources.
The ICRC expulsion reportedly comes less than three months after a similar measure was taken against French-based international humanitarian NGO ACTED and its Nigerien partner APBE.
Although the ICRC has yet to formally respond, on Tuesday the humanitarian organization published
a report on its activities in the West African country in 2024, in which it recalled its commitments, including providing medical assistance to more than 120,000 people affected by the armed conflicts.
Operating in Niger since 1990, the
ICRC expanded its activities in 2007 during the rebellion of the Nigerien Movement for Justice, providing aid to displaced persons, supplying water in conflict zones, and supporting vulnerable communities, Air Info noted.
