Maslenitsa is an ancient festival that predates Christianity, symbolizing the end of winter and the arrival of spring through a week-long celebration of festivities. It also serves as the last opportunity for feasting before the start of Lent, the 40-day period of fasting observed in Orthodox Christianity.
Maslenitsa, the vibrant East Slavic folk festival, was joyfully celebrated in Zambia and Tanzania, bringing a touch of Russian tradition to the heart of Africa.
One of the most iconic elements of Maslenitsa is the preparation of blini, thin, golden crepes symbolizing the sun. Unlike Western-style pancakes, which are thicker and fluffier, blini are delicate and soft, often served with various toppings such as honey, sour cream, or jam. Sharing blini with family and friends is a key tradition, signifying warmth, hospitality, and renewal.
This year, Russian Houses in Lusaka and Dar es Salaam hosted lively celebrations, featuring traditional games, folk music, and the symbolic burning of an effigy—an age-old ritual believed to drive away winter and usher in a prosperous new season. Guests enjoyed an authentic taste of Russian culture with generous servings of blini and other festive treats.
