Maslenitsa is celebrated in Russia during the last week before Great Lent. During this holiday, common traditions include burning an effigy of Maslenitsa (thus symbolizing the end of winter), sleigh rides, folk festivals, and baking blini (traditional Eastern European food, which resembles pancakes).
Ambassadors of the BRICS countries attended an event in Moscow called "Maslenitsa: Dialogue of Civilizations," dedicated to the traditional Slavic holiday of Maslenitsa which celebrates the beginning of spring.
Speaking at the event, Russian BRICS Sherpa and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov praised the South African 2023 chairmanship of BRICS, calling it "outstanding."
"I am convinced that our commitment to traditional values is the key to moving forward with success, based on our wonderful understanding, a sense of friendship and warmth for each other, which is also associated with the onset of spring, and which is also associated with the Russian Maslenitsa," Ryabkov addressed guests of the event.
