MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Saturday, US President Trump stated that Washington is "pretty close" to finalizing a rare earth minerals agreement with Kiev. This remark comes despite earlier reports from Ukrainian media, citing a source within Zelensky's office, which confirmed that Kiev is not yet ready to enter into such an agreement with the US.

Zelensky himself proposed the idea of an economic partnership to US President Donald Trump, which included US involvement in the exploitation of Ukraine's natural resources, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Saturday.
"Zelensky proposed giving the US a stake in Ukraine's rare earths elements and critical minerals on a visit to Trump Tower in September. In other words, it was the Ukrainian president himself who first proposed to President Trump a future, economic partnership with shared benefits to both nations," Bessent wrote in an article for the Financial Times newspaper.
Bessent added that the US would not take ownership of Ukraine's physical assets.
"The US would not be taking ownership of physical assets in Ukraine. Nor would it be saddling Ukraine with more debt," Bessent said.
