Pan-African platforms, such as the Pulse of Africa media company, could serve as a unifying media house, sharing positive stories across the continent and providing opportunities for global audiences to understand Africa's economic, educational, and social potential, Kenya's ruling United Democratic Alliance Party's executive director stated.
African media must take control of its narrative
to counter Western misrepresentation and ensure accurate, comprehensive, and positive coverage, Kenya's
United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA) Executive Director Nicodemus Bore told
Sputnik Africa in an exclusive interview.
"When they say that there is a war in Kivu... We watch the BBC, it's so different from what is being even broadcasted [...] in Congo itself. They [Western media] have a different picture. They have added a lot of information that is not true. Making it look like a crisis that requires international support. When you have your own media that can represent the information as it is on the ground, then you realize that some of the problems that are being portrayed as a crisis can be things that can be sorted internally without attracting so much attention," the politician explained.
African media should be committed to
balanced reporting that reflects the continent's complexities, showcasing both its challenges and achievements, Bore pointed out.
"We need to have journalists who are committed to comprehensive reporting. So that we have a neutral or a positive portrayal. We should focus on stories that showcase Africa's innovation and its good culture and progress, offering a more balanced view that counters prevailing negative stereotypes," he said.
Moreover, financial sustainability and independence for African media is crucial to resist Western influences, the UDA's executive director noted.
"Most of the time, most of the Western world will come to support an initiative, at the same time infringing into its own, into the privacy of that institution by gathering or mining information. So, when you have financial stability and sustainability. Then you protect yourself against external influences," Bore stated.
The speaker also emphasized the need for African media to ensure control of its narrative by leveraging social media, AI, and blockchain technology to ensure accurate, comprehensive, and positive coverage.
