White House Reportedly Plans to Cut USAID Staff by 97%

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The Donald Trump administration plans to cut the staff of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) by 97% to 294 employees, down from more than 10,000 currently working for the agency worldwide, a Western media outlet reported, citing sources.
On Wednesday, USAID announced that its employees worldwide would be placed on administrative leave effective February 7, with non-essential contracts terminated.
US President Donald Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting head of USAID on Monday. Rubio notified Congress that a review of USAID’s foreign assistance activities was underway with an eye toward a potential reorganization.

Government Employees' Unions Sue Trump Administration to Resume USAID Operations
US billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who leads the consultative Department of Government Efficiency, said that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID. Musk referred to the agency as a "criminal organization" that "needs to die."
