WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US President Trump ordered a 90-day suspension of all foreign assistance in one of his first executive orders after his inauguration on January 20, as part of a reassessment of US financial commitments abroad in accordance with his administration's "America First" policy.
Several US government employees' unions have filed a lawsuit demanding to reinstate the operations of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
The lawsuit, filed by the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) and American Federation of Government Employees, sues US President Donald Trump, State Secretary Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as well as their departments and USAID itself, calling on the Trump administration "to immediately cease actions to shut down USAID’s operations."

"These actions have generated a global humanitarian crisis by abruptly halting the crucial work of USAID employees, grantees, and contractors. They have cost thousands of American jobs. And they have imperiled US national security interests," the lawsuit read.

The plaintiffs also want the US government to appoint an independent director to the agency, open its buildings and web services, resume all grants and contracts, and pause placing its workers on leave.

USAID Overseas Offices Ordered to Shut Down, Staff to Be Withdrawn by Friday, Reports Say
Head of the Department of Government Efficiency Elon Musk said earlier in the week that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID, which he described as a "criminal organization" that "needs to die." On Monday, Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting head of USAID, after which Rubio notified Congress that a review of USAID's foreign assistance activities was underway with an eye toward a potential reorganization.
