European Council Head Says EU Will Protect Territorial Integrity of Denmark
10:07 30.01.2025 (Updated: 11:33 30.01.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Greenland was a colony of Denmark until 1953. It remains part of the kingdom, but in 2009 it received autonomy with the ability to self-govern and make independent choices in domestic policy.
European Council President Antonio Costa said that the European Union intends to protect the territorial integrity of Denmark amid threats by US President Donald Trump to
acquire Greenland."We must not stop defending these principles when the territorial integrity of a member state of the European Union is at stake … The territorial integrity of Denmark, the sovereignty of Denmark, the stability of its borders, as you can imagine, are obviously essential issues for us ... Denmark defines its interests and the European Union will support Denmark," Costa said in an interview with Euronews on Wednesday.
Trump called the ownership of Greenland "an absolute necessity" for the
United States in December. Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede said in response that the island was not for sale. Trump's national security adviser-designate, Mike Waltz, confirmed last week that the president was serious about considering all options to acquire Greenland, including the use of military force.
On Tuesday, a Verian poll showed that 85% of Greenlanders are against their island becoming part of the US.
