WASHINGTON (RIA Novosti) - Following his election victory in November, US President Donald Trump has announced several territorial expansion claims that have raised public concern, namely that Greenland and Canada should become part of the US and that he intends to regain US control of the Panama Canal.
Canada, Greenland, and Panama will remain independent of the United States under the Trump administration, renowned US economist and professor at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs told RIA Novosti.

"Canada, Panama, and Greenland remain independent of the United States, and I expect that will remain true for the next four years," Sachs noted.

He expressed confidence that threatening Canada, Panama, and Greenland was "mere posturing."
In December, Trump called it "an absolute necessity" for the US to own Greenland, officially a part of Denmark. Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede said in response that the island was not for sale.

This week, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen reportedly said that US President Donald Trump would not have Greenland, while Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen agreed with him.
In his inauguration speech last Monday, Trump said he wanted the US to regain control of the Panama Canal, which he said was handed over to Panama but was allegedly operated by China. He also accused Panama of overcharging US ships, including naval ones. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino rejected Trump's claims that the canal should belong to the US.
Later in the day, at the signing ceremony, Trump stated that the US needs Greenland to ensure international security.
In November, following his victory in the presidential election, Trump said Canada should become the 51st state of the US.
