MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The US needs Greenland for international security, Donald Trump said last Monday after his inauguration as the 47th US president.
Eighty-five percent of Greenlanders are against their island becoming part of the United States, according to a Verian poll conducted for the Danish newspaper Berlingske and Greenland's Sermitsiaq.
Only 6% of respondents expressed a desire to become part of the US, while another 9% found it difficult to answer, the report said on Tuesday.
In addition, 45% of respondents see a threat in US President Donald Trump's interest in Greenland.
The poll was conducted from January 22-26 and surveyed almost 500 people.

Greenland Should Start Talks With Denmark on Island's Independence, Lawmaker Says
In December, Trump called it "an absolute necessity" for the US to own Greenland, officially a part of Denmark. Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede said in response that the island was not for sale. In January, Trump's national security adviser-designate, Mike Waltz, said that Trump was ready to consider all options for acquiring Greenland, including the use of military force.
Greenland was a colony of Denmark until 1953. It remains part of the kingdom, but in 2009 it received autonomy with the ability to self-govern and make independent choices in domestic policy.
