Rospotrebnadzor also reminded that in the 21st century, 7 out of 16 known cases of dangerous pathogen leaks from biolabs occurred in the United States. American biofacilities account for up to 80% of known incidents of laboratory-acquired infections with dangerous diseases such as plague, anthrax, smallpox, and Ebola virus. MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In the city of Goma near the Rwandan border, there is a laboratory at the National Institute of Biomedical Research that stores samples of hemorrhagic fever pathogens, including the Ebola virus. Due to the armed conflict in the DR Congo, there are power outages that could lead to leaks of dangerous samples from the laboratory.
The laboratory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) fears can leak viruses is financed by the US and a French foundation, which once again shows the irresponsibility of Western countries when dealing with dangerous infections in third countries,
Russia's consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Wednesday.
"The activities of this laboratory are financed by the US Agency for International Development and the French Merieux Foundation. This circumstance once again confirms the irresponsible approach of Western countries when working with dangerous infections in the territory of third countries, when biological facilities are created without the proper infrastructure and samples of pathogens of dangerous diseases are accumulated without control," Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.
Rospotrebnadzor also reminded that in the 21st century,
7 out of 16 known cases of dangerous pathogen leaks from biolabs occurred in the United States.
American biofacilities account for up to 80% of known incidents of laboratory-acquired infections with dangerous diseases such as plague, anthrax, smallpox, and Ebola virus. The watchdog noted that to enhance laboratory capacity, mobile laboratories from Rospotrebnadzor have been delivered to African countries for early detection of infections in regions bordering Congo.
Rospotrebnadzor added that it is monitoring the situation in the republic. It noted that to enhance laboratory capacity,
mobile laboratories from Rospotrebnadzor have been delivered to African countries for early detection of infections in regions bordering Congo.
On Tuesday, ICRC Director for Africa Patrick Youssef said that the organization had warned the DRC of the risk of a virus leak from a laboratory in Goma due to the fighting, looting, and power supply disruptions currently occurring in the city.
"[We are] concerned about the situation in the laboratory of the national biomedical research institute, which is facing a risk of power cuts, as well as a question of preserving the samples that may be affected by the clashes," he was quoted as saying.
Rebel troops from the
M23 movement, reportedly supported by Rwandan forces, entered Goma late on last Sunday. Fighting is now ongoing in several neighborhoods of the city against defending units of the Congolese army, accompanied by looting and theft. In Goma, the water supply, electricity, and mobile communication have not been functioning for five consecutive days.
