The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of creating a self-reliant aviation sector while transforming Nigeria into a regional hub for aviation services. The MRO facility is a collaboration between XEJet and local financial institutions, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign aviation services.
Nigeria’s federal government has unveiled plans to establish an aircraft manufacturing firm as part of its strategy to boost the country’s aviation industry, local media reported, citing Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, who made this announcement during the
launch of XEJet’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and flight support center in Abuja.
“Since we came to office, we’ve been focused on attracting MRO facilities to our aviation ecosystem, just as they exist in other parts of the world. We’ve searched far and wide for investors, but now we see that what we were looking for elsewhere is right here at home. This collaboration between an indigenous operator and local banks is a dream come true,” Keyamo reportedly said.
The minister also highlighted the inclusion of additional facilities, such as a training center, as a key milestone.
“This development will not only serve Nigeria but will attract users from across the West African sub-region. That’s the dream—to make this facility a regional center for excellence,” he added.
Emmanuel Iza, Chief Executive Officer of XEJet, shared the company’s ambitious vision of contributing to aircraft manufacturing in
Nigeria.“Even if it’s just components like wings, landing gears, or tires, Nigeria has the talent and ability; we just need the enabling environment and facilities to make it happen,” Iza was quoted as saying.
The multimillion-dollar project is also expected to generate significant
employment opportunities. Iza noted that XEJet currently employs about 300 people and anticipates
quadrupling that number with the new facility.
The first phase of the project, which includes preparing the site and constructing a taxiway to connect the runway, is estimated to cost $5 million. The main structure will require an equal investment, according to Iza.
