Wanatu, a South African e-hailing service, launched in Pretoria and Centurion in Gauteng province last October, and one of the mandatory requirements for applicants is to be fluent in Afrikaans, CEO Judith van der Walt told a South African media outlet. While drivers must be obligatory competent in Afrikaans, the app offers English translation for riders, van der Walt noted, adding that Afrikaans does not have to be the native language of the company's employees, who come from a variety of ethnic groups. While having moderate prices, the service aims to compete with established companies by prioritizing safety and offering specialized school and airport transport, with planned expansion to other cities of South Africa, including Cape Town, the report added.

South African E-Hailing Service Hires Only Afrikaans-Speaking Drivers, Report Says

According to the CEO of the South African e-hailing service requiring Afrikaans-speaking drivers, the company employs its drivers directly, and has so far received over 1,000 applications from prospective employees.
Wanatu, a South African e-hailing service, launched in Pretoria and Centurion in Gauteng province last October, and one of the mandatory requirements for applicants is to be fluent in Afrikaans, CEO Judith van der Walt told a South African media outlet.
While drivers must be obligatory competent in Afrikaans, the app offers English translation for riders, van der Walt noted, adding that Afrikaans does not have to be the native language of the company's
employees, who come from a variety of ethnic groups.
While having moderate prices, the service aims to compete with established companies by prioritizing safety and offering specialized school and airport transport, with planned expansion to other cities of
South Africa, including Cape Town, the report added.
"We want to provide a service to a market that didn't even see e-hailing as an option before because they felt it was unsafe," van der Walt emphasized.
