Cholera is a highly contagious disease transmitted through contaminated food and water. It can lead to sudden, watery diarrhea and, if not treated swiftly, can be deadly within hours in severe cases.
Angola's Ministry of Health announced a cholera outbreak on Friday evening,
noting 12 deaths since last Tuesday's confirmation of the first case.
By 6 pm local time on Friday, 119 cholera cases had been documented, with 14 confirmed through lab testing and another 12 samples under review.
In the last 24 hours, 24 new cases emerged, with 20 located in Cacuaco Municipality, which is the epicenter of the outbreak. Cacuaco, situated in the Luanda province, is a suburban area housing over 1.2 million residents.
Out of the 119 cases, 53% are female and 47% male, with 11 of the 12
fatalities occurring in Cacuaco.
The bulletin, seen by the Chinese state media outlet Xinhua, described a cholera case as "a patient with severe or extreme dehydration, or death due to acute watery diarrhea, with or without vomiting, in individuals over the age of two in areas where cholera is present." A confirmed case involves "a suspected case where the cholera vibrio has been isolated in stool samples."
