Cholera outbreaks have recently been reported in several southern African countries, notably Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. In February of this year, an emergency summit of SADC heads of state and government decided to carry out mass cholera vaccinations in the region and to strengthen sanitary controls at borders.
Moscow has donated a batch of anti-cholera supplies to Zimbabwe, including drug kits, consumables, and medical equipment, according to Russian media. The humanitarian cargo was delivered with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Harare.
Zimbabwe's Minister of Health and Child Care, Douglas Mombeshora, expressed his deepest
gratitude to the Russian government for their generous gift, stating that their support was an important contribution to the fight against cholera.
The official added that the drugs are critical in treating the sick. They will be distributed to areas where they are most needed to prevent deaths.
While Zimbabwe has declared an end to the latest cholera outbreak, the current gift will help the country expand its capacity to save lives, he added.
According to the minister, bilateral relations between
Zimbabwe and Russia will continue to strengthen, especially now that Moscow is offering to begin training medical personnel to improve Zimbabwe's health sector.
