The Sudanese army and the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been locked in conflict for 20 months, creating a profound humanitarian crisis that has reportedly driven more than 10 million people from their homes and killed tens of thousands.
Sudan's Sovereign Council chairman, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has definitively ruled out a return to the pre-war situation with the rebel Rapid Support Forces.
In a televised address marking
Sudan's 69th Independence Day, al-Burhan declared that a return to the status quo ante bellum is unacceptable, referring to the RSF as "murderers and criminals."
"The situation cannot return to how it was before April 15, 2023, nor can we accept the presence of these murderers, criminals, and their supporters among the Sudanese people again," al-Burhan said.
While expressing openness to genuine peace initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and facilitating the safe return of displaced civilians, the leader stated unequivocally that the RSF's presence within Sudan is intolerable.
He highlighted the
devastating human cost of the war, citing nearly 25,000 deaths and over 10 million displaced since the conflict erupted in April 2023.
The fighting has ravaged the country, pushing millions to the brink of starvation and death, and despite international mediation efforts, a lasting ceasefire remains elusive.
