The UN Security Council presidency rotates monthly among its 15 members. The president, the head of the rotating country’s delegation, coordinates actions, resolves disputes, and sometimes acts as a diplomat. This system has been in place since 1946.
Algeria begins its January presidency of the UN Security Council, counting on this opportunity to advance issues concerning the
conflicts in the Middle East and the security situation in Africa.
The first priority will be to make progress on the Palestinian issue, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf earlier declared. The minister further noted that since joining the Security Council, Algeria had been recognized for initiating all measures aimed at maintaining attention on the Palestinian issue.
Other priorities include the fight against terrorism in Africa and the strengthening of ties between the Arab League and the
UN.
To achieve these goals,
Algeria plans to organize an open ministerial discussion with the expected attendance of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
