Somalia welcomed the adoption of the resolution as a crucial step toward peace and stability, the UNSC said in a statement.
The UN Security Council approved the replacement of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the UNSC said in a
statement.
"The Security Council today [on Friday] endorsed the African Union Peace and Security Council’s decision to replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), marking a further step in transitioning national security responsibilities to Somalia's own forces," read the statement.
The UNSC authorized African Union (AU) members to take all necessary measures, including supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in degrading terrorist groups, for 12 months, starting from January 1, 2025, according to the statement.
"The council also welcomed the progress made so far by Somalia in assuming progressively greater responsibility for its national security, including the Somali security forces taking over responsibilities from 7,000 drawn-down ATMIS forces since 2022," the UNSC emphasized.
The adopted resolution empowered AU member states to deploy up to 12,626 uniformed personnel in Somalia and mandated them to complete the realignment of all AU troops from ATMIS to
AUSSOM by June 30, 2025.
