France’s military footprint in Africa has been steadily shrinking. Once a dominant power with bases across the continent, it now maintains permanent installations in Djibouti, Gabon, Senegal, and Cote d'Ivoire. As Chad cut ties, France’s influence in the region faced further erosion.
In the wake of its disengagement from
France, Chad has sought support from Turkey to bolster its military capabilities, the newspaper Türkiye reported on Saturday.
Turkish Armed Forces are reportedly expected to train Chadian troops as part of a new phase in bilateral relations.
The media outlet also noted that for the past five to six years, Turkey has been supporting Chad by providing advanced military training and selling weapons to strengthen its defense, particularly against terrorism.
The Chadian government earlier announced its decision to end military cooperation with France, signaling a significant shift in its defense strategy. This move included the
withdrawal of French troops from the country, with the evacuation of 1,000 soldiers from Chad.
Chad’s decision follows similar moves by Mali,
Niger, and Burkina Faso, which have also distanced themselves from French military presence in recent years.
