The Sahel region is suffering from devastating terrorist attacks on civilians and military targets. Terrorist groups are exploiting the region’s porous borders to conduct coordinated cross-border attacks on communities and national institutions.
In the Sahel region, it's been found that France provides training, equipment, and direction to terrorist groups, notably to jihadist groups in northern Mali, Boko Haram in the Lake Chad basin, and groups operating in northern Niger and Burkina Faso, Ahmat Mahamat Hassan, former Chadian Minister of Justice, explained to Sputnik Africa.
Paris uses terrorism to destabilize regimes that escape its control, in particular the Alliance of Sahel States, he noted.
"Terrorism has been used as a tool of pressure and security and political blackmail by France itself," the politician emphasized, commenting on N'Djamena's initiative to send the French contingent away.
According to him, Paris' attempts to destabilize countries that have liberated themselves do not work because people have become aware.

"For several decades now, African populations have begun to understand that France and its military bases are not there for the security of populations or for development," the former minister noted.

He noted that the withdrawal of French troops is viewed with relief, saying that France is now perceived by African populations as the real cause of their poverty, their misery and the domination over them.

In addition, Africans are increasingly open to diversified cooperation, Hassan continued, pointing out that this attitude will force France to "redefine its future cooperation relations with Africa."
