EU to Maintain Foreign Policy Despite BRICS Call for Reforms, EU Commission States
11:43 26.10.2024 (Updated: 10:46 28.10.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Wednesday, BRICS leaders called for a reform of Bretton Woods institutions to ensure greater representation of developing countries, according to the final declaration adopted following the October 22-24 BRICS Summit.
The European Union will not adjust its foreign policy in light of the
BRICS Summit in Russia's Kazan, where the world's fastest-growing economies called for international organizations to be
reformed, an EU foreign policy spokesperson said on Friday.
"The EU has its own policy, and it is not the BRICS summit that is going to define the EU's policies one way or another," Nabila Massrali told a news briefing.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association created in 2006. Russia assumed the rotating presidency of the bloc on January 1, 2024. The year began with the accession of new members to the association. In addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, according to the website of the Russian 2024 BRICS Chairmanship. Media reports said that Saudi Arabia has not formalized its participation yet but has been taking part in BRICS meetings.
