BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter yet to formalize membership, although participating in BRICS meetings.
The BRICS 2024 Summit held in Russia on October 22–24 debunks many myths about Russia's perceived isolation, and it also sends a strong message to the West that the world desires and thus is moving towards multipolarity, PhD in International Relations and a social science researcher Dr. Nicodemus Minde told Sputnik Africa, commenting on the summit's significance. Russia’s president really makes efforts to provide food security on the African continent, the researcher noted.

"This particular initiative and declaration that has been passed by President Vladimir Putin and it is an effort towards a more food-secure world, especially in the continent of Africa, which still continues to really rely on grain," he said about Vladimir Putin's initiative for opening of the BRICS Grain Exchange.

De-dollarization is one of the aims of BRICS; it will enable the member countries to develop their international trade, to surpass sanctions and embargoes placed by the West, the expert added.
As the world is developing, broader reforms are needed in the UN Security Council, including the membership reform. BRICS is pushing for the alternative voice and broader multipolarity, which increases the demands for such reforms, Minde continued.

"The UN is an institution is mandated to deal with the issues of great security. Most of these security issues are happening in countries that are maybe not being represented. So, we can see the demand and if this statement that has been issued by the BRICS really will help towards calling for more demands to really reform the United Nations security architecture, which has for 50 years been dominated by Western voices," he explained.
