Mozambicans went to the polls last Wednesday to choose a new president. Daniel Chapo is being challenged by independent Venancio Mondlane and the leaders of Mozambique's two other major parties, Ossufo Momade and Lutero Simango. Voters also had to decide who would fill the 250 seats in the country's single-chamber parliament.
Daniel Chapo, the presidential candidate for Mozambique’s ruling party, FRELIMO, is leading in all 11 provinces following last week's general election, according to preliminary results released on Wednesday.
The electoral commission described polling as "generally peaceful." However, election observers have raised concerns about the integrity of the vote, stating that the process fell short of international standards. Opposition parties have denounced the election results, accusing FRELIMO of fraud.
Final results are expected on October 24.
