The declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization earlier this month followed an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that spread to neighboring countries. DR Congo has reported over 31,000 suspected cases and 1,000 deaths.
Zimbabwe has confirmed two cases of mpox, bringing the total number of African countries reporting the viral disease to 17. The cases were identified in Harare and Mberengwa, Midlands Province, and both individuals are currently in home isolation receiving treatment.
Health and Child Care Minister Dr. Douglas Mombeshora reassured the nation that the situation is under control, with all necessary structures, including ports of entry, on high alert.

"Both cases are in isolation at home and are receiving appropriate care. Both cases are stable and recovering," the minister said, noting that the two confirmed cases have a travel history outside of Zimbabwe, suggesting they contracted the virus abroad.
