Since the beginning of 2024, DR Congo has reported over 30,000 suspected and confirmed cases of mpox, a virus spread through close contact, accounting for 90% of the total reported cases in Africa.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has launched its first vaccination campaign against mpox, marking a crucial step in containing an outbreak that has ravaged the country and spread across Africa.
The campaign, which began with vaccinations for healthcare workers in Goma, is facing limitations due to a shortage of vaccines. Despite receiving 265,000 doses, more are needed to address the vast scale of the outbreak.
"The rollout of the vaccine marks an important step in limiting the spread of the virus and ensuring the safety of families and communities," stated Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO's Africa director.
