The Sahel region has been grappling with a growing threat from terrorist groups for years. Terrorist attacks have caused widespread suffering to civilians and military forces alike.
On September 18th, following

"ECOWAS followed with outrage the news of the jihadist terrorist attacks on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, on military facilities in Bamako, Mali, resulting in loss of life and significant property damage ... [The community] would like to reaffirm our strong condemnation of any terrorist attacks that threaten the peace and security of the West African region," stated the organization.
ECOWAS also expressed condolences to the Malian people, government, and the victims' families.
A
terrorist group, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM)*, claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks on an airport and a military training school in Bamako, which caused heavy material losses, including the destruction of aircraft.
