Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS in late January, citing the bloc's inability to effectively address the threat of terrorism.
ECOWAS must "reform and show its independence," Abdoul Sacko, the coordinator of the Forum of Social Forces of Guinea, told Sputnik Africa. He had earlier urged his compatriots not to rely on the regional organization, which he believes is weakened by the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
"ECOWAS will need to incorporate certain dimensions, such as the demands of these three countries, who argue that ECOWAS is no longer the organization that defends the economic, political, and social stability of the sub-region," said Abdoul Sacko.
He added that the organization should demonstrate its primary mission is to "defend and promote stability, both economic and political, and to support countries within the sub-region."
