Brazil Buys Significant Volumes of Fertilizers, Petroleum Products From Russia, Embassy Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Trade between the two countries grew 1.8 times in December 2023, hitting an all-time high of $1.6 billion after Russia supplied a record amount of oil products to Brazil, according to Sputnik's calculations based on Brazil's official statistics.
Brazil continues to purchase fertilizers and fuel from
Russia, with trade in these areas reaching significant volumes despite existing difficulties in finance and logistics, Minister Counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in Russia Mauricio Da Costa Carvalho Bernardes said on Tuesday.
"We are making great efforts for the mutual complementarity of our productions to be more felt, because Brazil needs fertilizers and Russia produces them. In 2023, we reached significant trade volumes, especially regarding supplies of fertilizers from Russia to Brazil. Of course, we are facing some financial and logistical difficulties," the diplomat said during a meeting of the Brazil-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Commercial, Scientific and Technological Cooperation.
In fuels and petroleum products, trade also increased to
new record levels, he added.
"The strategy of the Brazilian government is not only to increase our sales volumes of goods to Russia, but we must be a reliable supplier for Russia. We must operate in the Russian domestic market, to know better what Russia needs, while the Russian side should pay attention to what we need," the diplomat said.
Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Brazil, where they discussed further development of friendly bilateral relations, including preparations for the 12th session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation and the next meeting of the High-Level Commission to agree on additional measures to expand mutual trade and implement joint projects in various fields.
