South Africa's Former Olympic Runner Pistorius Released From Prison on Parole, Media Reports
After making history in 2012 by becoming the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics, South African runner Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and five months in jail for the murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013.
South Africa's former Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been
released from prison on parole, media said.
He reportedly served more than half of his sentence for shooting his 29-year-old girlfriend, Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013, whom, he said, he had mistaken for an intruder.
His initial five-year conviction was extended several times on appeal to 13 years and five months. Being released on parole, Pistorius is required to undergo therapy for anger and gender-based violence issues, refrain from alcohol and
other substances, and complete community service, the outlet revealed.
"An elevated public profile linked to Pistorius does not make him different from other inmates nor warrant inconsistent treatment," the department of correctional services was quoted as saying.
Pistorius is famous for being the first double-amputee who participated at the 2012 Olympic Games. In 2004, he broke the 200m world record at the Athens Paralympics. At the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, he won the 100m, 200m and 400m
sprint titles.
